Kuroda Family Treasures on Display "The 10th Feudal Lord Narikiyo and the Onagagamo"

Fukuoka City Museum
Finished
Narikiyo Kuroda (1795-1851), the 10th lord of the Fukuoka domain, succeeded his father Naritaka, the ninth lord, after his sudden death, and remained lord of the domain for about 40 years. He excelled in Dutch studies, herbalism, and natural history, and while on guard duty in Nagasaki, which was assigned to the Fukuoka domain by the shogunate, he had academic exchanges with Siebold, a physician on Dejima in Holland.

In his study of birds, he wrote a book on ducks in particular. His attitude toward natural history was inherited by Nagahiro Kuroda, the 11th head of the domain, and further passed down to his descendants, including Nagamichi, the 14th head of the domain, who began specialized ornithological research around 1907, starting with duck research, and became one of the leading ornithologists in Japan before and after World War II.

The ducks on display in this exhibition are among the fabric wall hangings made in commemoration of the ducks that made the Kuroda family famous for their ornithological research in modern times.
