The Artistic Cosmos of Kōetsu Hon'ami

Tokyo National Museum
Finished
Kōetsu Hon’ami (1558-1637) lived in a time of warfare and was involved in various forms of art, producing innovative and outstanding works of art. They have greatly influenced the Japanese culture of later generations. However, Hon’ami's world is as profound as the macrocosm, and it is not easy to trace its entirety.

This exhibition focuses on the society of the Hokke merchants of the time, to whom Hon'ami and his family were devoutly devoted, as a thread linking the inner world of Hon’ami's calligraphy and ceramics, and the maki-e and other forms of art responding to the social conditions of his time, in which artisans who gathered under the same faith were involved. By comparing the latest research in the world of figurative art with the state of faith, this exhibition aims to provide a comprehensive view of Hon'ami.

Hon'ami, who was known as "a man of the most extraordinary style" and "a man of the most extraordinary character," was a man of a lifetime of hardship.
