Gallery Yamaguchi

Gallery Yamaguchi was opened in March 1980 in Ginza 3-chome as a Contemporary art gallery.
Because contemporary art works have become much larger in scale, they opened another, larger exhibition space in Shinkiba in May 1991. They unified these two galleries into a new gallery in Ginza 7-chome in August 1993 and then in August 1995 this gallery moved to its current location in Kyobashi where many contemporary art galleries are gathered.

They exhibit mainly abstract paintings and sculptures by the next generation of Japanese artists in the 30 to 60 age range. The gallery selects works based on these criteria: striking originality, beautifully refined expression, advanced techniques and clear concepts. Approximately twenty brilliant artists hold their shows periodically; Kakuzo Tatehata, Shinohara, Kosai Hori, Hisashi Momose, Junji Amano, Yoshiro Negishi, Atsuo Okamoto, Haruyuki Uchida, and Go Watanabe.

While their works are mostly supplied to public museums, the gallery introduces intimate small pieces, and works that are suitable for modern architectural spaces. In addition they commission works such as outdoor sculptures for squares and parks. They joined the "Melbourne-Tokyo Contemporary Art Exchange Exhibition" in 1983, the "Paris-Tokyo Contemporary Art Exchange Exhibition" in 1984 and the "Berlin-Tokyo Contemporary Art Exchange Exhibition" in 1988 as part of a program of international exchange. Moreover, in 1997 the "Jan van Munster/Atsuo Okamoto exchange exhibition" was held in both Tokyo and Amsterdam. Since 1993, they have continued to support and train young artists as a member of the “Tokyo Modern Art Gallery Meeting”.
