SHUGOARTS presents "Engawa of Light", glass sculptures garden by Ritsue Mishima.
Mishima was born in Kyoto in 1962, and moved to Venice, Italy in 1989. She started working with glass after she had an unexpected encounter with glass at Murano Island in 1996. She became the 1st Giorgio Armani prize winner at Sotheby's London in 2001. In 2003, she attracted attention with her striking installation at Milano Salone. Her pieces are also in the collection of the Boijmans Van Beuningen in Holland.
The main theme of the show, "Engawa of Light", is based on Mishima's belief in relationship. Human beings and nature, and something that connects people... The word "Engawa" in the title is a unique veranda-like place of a Japanese house which is open to the outside. Daily communication also takes place at this place. The word Engawa expresses a connection and a communication that exists between two things. Light gathers, people gather, and conversations start... at the Engawa of Light.
She is going to create a place where light will form shapes on a new Engawa in our gallery space.
