Cruel Fate! Family Novels from the Meji-Taisho Period

Yayoi Museum
Finished

Artists

Yanagawa, Shun'yo, etc.
The Meiji 30’s saw the growing popularity of ‘Family Novels’, melodramatic stories depicting the tragedies and conflicts faced by women in feudal families. They were serialized in daily papers, and were greeted fervently by a wide range of readers, especially women.
From Koyo Ozaki’s “Golden Demon” to Roka Tokutomi’s “Hototogisu” and Shun’yo Yanagawa’s “Nasanu-Naka”, they were decorated by colorful illustrations which accentuated the harsh calamities of fate. Immediately adapted to theater, they also contributed to the rise and development of “New Theater Plays”.
This exhibition reflects upon the Family Novel by illustrations, actual newspapers, postcards, and other material. Manuscripts, photographs, and other belongings of Shun’yo Yanagawa will also be on display.
