Maki-e Lacquer of the Igarashi School

Tokyo National Museum
Finished

Artists

Dôho Igarashi et al.
According to records, the beginnings of the famous Igarashi School of maki-e lacquer artists can be found in the Muromachi period (1392 - 1573). This school, employing traditional techniques handed down from the 14th century, is known for displaying extremely refined qualities in their works.
It was Dôho Igarashi (-1678) who brought the Igarashi to fame in the Edo Period. Working in Kyoto, he was later invited to serve in the court of the Maeda Clan in Kanazawa.
This exhibition will feature works thought to be made by Dôho, among other Edo-period Igarashi Maki-e which were handed down through the Maeda Clan. We hope you enjoy the intricate mastery of the Igarashi Maki-e.
