Georges de La Tour
In 2003, the NMWA purchased “St. Thomas” by Georges de La Tour (1593-1652). To introduce this new acquisition to the general public, the NMWA presents “Georges de La Tour: World of Light and Shadow”, featuring approximately 20 of the artist’s works.
Known for his mastery in depicting the effects of light, La Tour’s paintings are rendered with an almost modern feel. His skillful portrayal of candlelight in particular, gave birth to his considerable fame. Forgotten almost immediately after his death, it was not until the 20th century that his works were rediscovered by the art world. Today, only about 40 authentic works by La Tour remain.
This exhibition will have a third of the artist’s extant paintings on display, alongside copies and related works.
