Ayao Yamana
This December's exhibition at the ginza graphic gallery is entitled "Another Side of Ayao Yamana, 1920s-70s."
The legacy of Ayao Yamana (1897-1980) has always been discussed in the same breath as Shiseido's corporate image and advertising. Certainly it is impossible to talk about him in isolation from their close relationship, but this does not do justice to the whole picture of Ayao Yamana.
Other projects include: his work for the publishing house Platon, mainly on the literary magazine Josei ("Women") and the entertainment magazine Kuraku ("Pleasure and Pain"); his many modern illustrations for publications such as the Sunday Mainichi; the provocative articles on design he published in the design magazine Kokokukai ; his editorial design for the overseas advertising magazine NIPPON issued by Nihon Kobo; his involvement in international propaganda during WWII; his work on the illustrations and covers for detective stories immediately following the end of the war; his leadership in the Japan Advertising Artists Club soon after its inception, as well as in the Tokyo Ad Art Directors Club; his mantle as a historian of design, symbolized by his great work Taikenteki dezain-shi ("Design History Experienced by Ayao Yamana"); and his activities as an educator at Tama Art University and Nippon Designer Institute. In all these is visible the lone figure of a rare designer who tirelessly continued to leadthe way of Japanese design.
This exhibition focuses on the relatively untold story of Ayao Yamana's activities outside Shiseido. Around 300 exhibits, including posters, book covers, packages, and illustrations, together create a different image of Ayao Yamana.
