The works featured in this exhibition are of artists who expressed the “invisible” within the human soul. European modernity is characterized by the development of rational scientific thought, but a strong current of mysticism was also present underneath. This duality was expressed in art as the coexistence of rational depiction and imaginative creation. The Romanticists and the Symbolists who belonged to the latter current took on motifs impossible to capture by the light of reason, like phantasms, dreams, and delusions. The subsequent 20th century saw the liberation of the unconscious by the Surrealists, while glass crafts by Art Nouveau and Art Deco artists released the imagery concealed in the material to visualize an inner world.
This exhibition will be an overview of the legacy of European Fantastic Art. 95 Paintings, Prints, Sculptures and Glass Crafts will be on display.
