Travel and the Onsen Spa

Tokyo National Museum
Finished
This thematic exhibition features travel in the Edo period. During this time, visits to the Ise Shrine were as common as present-day overseas travel. Of course, there were various feudal restrictions on travel, especially for women, such as the difficulty of obtaining travel passes. But it is known that, in the second half of the Edo period, travel became common for working women. Travel guides published at the time introduce souvenirs and famous views, and give useful tips and precautions. “Useful Tips for Travelers”, by Yasumi Roan, was the defining title in that genre. Featured in these guidebooks were the Onsen Spas, one of the favorite destinations of travel at that time. Guidebooks and maps from this era will be on display.
