Traditional Crafts: Exploring the World of Craftsmanship

Tokyo National Museum
Finished
The Law for Protection of Cultural Properties was enacted in 1950 to protect both tangible and intangible cultural property. The first intangible assets to be protected were selected in 1952, and the preparation of documents to preserve traditional craftsmanship was inaugurated. The Law was partially revised in 1954, and since then the category of "Important Intangible Cultural Property" was established alongside the continued collection of craftsmanship techniques.
In 2000, part of the works collected by the Agency of Cultural Affairs for protection was transferred to our museum. This exhibition will display the technical documents for japan (varnish), china, gold-crafting and cloisonne enamel alongside actual works to explore the world of traditional craftsmanship.
