HANGA: Waves of East - West Cultural Interchange

The University Art Museum - Tokyo University of the Arts
Finished
As a form of reproductive art, Hanga(block print) was an important agent in east-west cultural exchange. Even during Isolation, Japan continued to import printed books and artwork through Dejima. These were the foundations upon which Western Studies and Western Painting were built in Japan.
This exhibition will reflect upon the history of Hanga in Japan. Part One of the Exhibition will cover the late Edo Period to the original Hanga period, while Part Two will cover WW2 to the present day.
