Seven-stringed Zither, a National Treasure, and Ancient Musical Instruments

Tokyo National Museum
Finished
Amongst the Treasures of Horyuji Temple are ancient instruments like the 7-string Koto, Tsuzumi-Do, and the Shakuhachi. Musical instruments and Buddhist temples may not seem a likely match. However, ritual music was a staple of religious ceremonies during antiquity.
The Tsuzumi-Do was a percussive instrument used to accompany masked plays called “Gigaku”, while the Shakuhachi (a different type than the kind common today) was employed in “Tang Music”, the official music of the Tang Dynasty. Yoko-bue from the Kamakura and Muromachi Periods and a Black-Lacquer Tsuzumi-Do will also be on display.
