The reputation of the Paris-based abstract artist Zao Wou-Ki has continued to grow in recent years. Born in Beijing to a distinguished family dating back to the Sung dynasty, Zao moved to France in 1948 at the age of 27. He started to come to grips with abstract painting in the mid-1950s, and was greatly influenced by his relationship with the artists of the Art Informel ('Unformed Art') movement, which was a significant trend in France at the time. Zao took French nationality in 1964. His prolific and varied output encompasses large-scale oils in vivid colors, India ink monochromes, and prints. He can be seen as an artist who has transcended the aesthetic differences of East and West to concentrate instead on pushing the possibilities of painting itself. This exhibition brings together around 70 key works spanning Zao's entire career to provide a retrospective of his output over the last half-century.
