Hara Museum ARC is presenting an exhibition entitled "ART & LIFE" which features Exquisite Pain by Sophie Calle and other works from the Hara Museum's Permanent Collection.
Artists throughout the ages have created art on a diversity of themes, often related to their own personal experiences. In some cases, art becomes one with the artist's life itself. Sophie Calle may be a case in point.
Her work consists of a large number of photographs, texts and a reconstruction of a hotel room. "Exquisite pain" is a medical term for an intense, local pain or ache that occurs in one part of the body. Having received a scholarship in 1984, Calle came to live in Japan for three months, during which she counted the days until a promised rendezvous with her lover in India. In the end, her lover failed to appear on the appointed day. She depicts the events that led to that day of disappointment and the subsequent process of recovery using a progression of photographs and beautifully embroidered text (of the Japanese translation) that will no doubt draw viewers inexorably into the unique world of the artist.
Along with Exquisite Pain will be works by such artists as Kusama Yayoi, who continues producing works as a way to dispel obsessions, as well as Tabaimo and Tadanori Yokoo. Through art, these artists depict life as lived by others, as well as themselves. We invite you to ponder the results.
