Artists

Kuniyoshi Utagawa, Kyosai Kawanabe
Kuniyoshi Utagawa (1797-1861) gained fame in the ukiyo-e world during the Bakumatsu era with his musha-e, or warrior pictures. Kyosai Kawanabe (1831-1889) was trained under the Kano school and had a solid background in Fine Arts, but also worked actively in other fields of art such as ukiyo-e and illustrations. This exhibition will juxtapose the powerful works of the two masters of the Bakumatsu and the Meiji, or the eras which marked the most radical of political and social changes. Among those exhibited will be Kuniyoshi's favored ukiyo-e triptych of cats, and Kyosai's 17m long draw curtains depicting actors performing roles as ghosts.
