Textile Art of Afghanistan

Tokyo National Museum
Finished
The nomads used common fibers like wool and horsehair to spin yarn. They then dyed and wove it into various utensils: clothing, bags, tent cloths, rugs and decorative bands. Geometric patterns like diamonds and zigzags, also popular in Japanese culture, are some trademarks of Afghan textile art. They are believed to signify fertility, prosperity and peace.
This thematic exhibition focuses on 20th century Afghan textile art. Amongst them are Kirim tapestries, Pile Fabrics, and Felt Fabrics. Having been developed through the long and colorful history of nomadic life, they transmit the rich tradition of Afghan textile art to this day.
