Rachel Rosalen
This is the first solo exhibition in Japan of Rachel Rosalen, a remarkable emerging artist from Brazil. In recent years, Brazilian art has cultivated many unique talents, gathering keen interests from around the world.
Rachel Rosalen (b. 1971, São Paulo) is a multimedia artist based in São Paulo, exhibiting her work internationally in such places as Rome, New York and Tokyo. She received a bachelor’s degree in Architecture and Urbanism from the Fine Arts University of São Paulo and a master’s degree in Multimedia Art from Campinas State University (UNICAMP), Brazil.
Rosalen creates video and installation work on the concepts of urbanism, architecture, body, environment, love and solitude. From September 2003 to March 2004, she visited Japan to conduct research and to create artworks with the support of the Japan Foundation’s Artist in Residence Fellowship. Many new works were produced in the process of analyzing Japan from an outsider’s point of view.
The interactive video installation "Zerozones" is one of the works created during the artist’s residency in Japan. It was first exhibited at the Japan Foundation in São Paulo in 2004 and received excellent reviews. Numerous egg-shaped objects made of ceramic are placed on the sand-laid floor in a hexagonal room. The walls of the room are covered with mirrors. Motion censors installed in the room monitor the movement of the viewer and switch the fragmented images cast from the multiple projectors. The viewer not only sees the projected images and objects, but the infinite reflections of the viewer himself also become a part of the kaleidoscopic space. “Zerozones” is a recent work on a monumental scale, in which images of a city, the female body, destruction, creation and memories organically unfold.
Also on view is a new video installation "Yokubo Sutra" and the video "Nihon Nikki". "Yokubo Sutra" illustrates emptiness and anticipation. "Nihon Nikki" depicts violence, affection, indifference and passion with the restrained action of a man and a woman facing each other.
