After the Meiji era, Japanese wood prints evolved from the traditional Ukiyo-e into more abstract renditions through the efforts of Kiyochika Kobayashi and Kanae Yamamoto.
Over the years, many artists have chosen to work with wood prints and have produced a wide variety of works in both the traditional ukiyo-e and the more abstract styles.
When looking back at the history of the Japanese wood prints in the past 100 years, delicacy and warmth stand out as common characteristics. This warmth has fascinated countless viewers.
This exhibition reviews the history of Japanese wood prints from the Meiji era to the post Second World War. On show are works from the permanent collection of the museum as well as prints loaned from other museums. Special focus is placed on artists who produced the "warm" prints, such as Sumio Kawakami, Shikoh Munakata and Koshiro Onchi.
