Yoshie Sakai
Yoshie Sakai was born in Chiba in 1965. She graduated in post-graduate studies from the Kyoto City University of Arts in 1993. She is now living and working in Kyoto.
Sakai depicts surfaces of water, extending them over a whole canvas. The surface is delimited by soft curves that seemingly resemble a big color field; but when one examines the canvas carefully, small eyes and nose can be seen. Sad and funny facial expressions are floating on the surface. In another work, the ankle of a child can be seen soaking in water. The point of view is, in fact, reversed with the big mass of water actually floating in the air.
In her works, the water surfaces seem to extend outside the canvas as if the viewer too was soaking in the water; a very humbling and calming effect.
