Peter Newman was born in London in 1969 and attended Goldsmith's College, University of London, from 1987 to 1990. Since graduating, he has had solo shows in London, New York, Hamburg and Brussels. His work has also been exhibited at the 21st Century Museum for Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Japan and the Guggenheim Museum, Venice, Italy.
For this exhibition, Roentgenwerke will be showing the series 'Skyspaces', created in 2005. 'Skyspaces' are cut from 40mm Aluminium plate, their shapes are that of the sky, as defined by the architecture of various different cities. Original photographs are taken with a fisheye lens, looking upwards, at the centres of crossings in London, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Tokyo.
'Skyspaces' visualize the sky at which we usually look up unintentionally as a solid object, leading us to a new understanding of the vast expanse of space spread above the concrete jungle.
A reception for the artist will be held on Friday, December 19th from 7-9pm.
