Hans Arp

Hans Arp (1886-1966) is known as one of the most innovative artists of 20th century art. A sculptor, painter, and poet, he was one of the founders of the Dada movement in 1916. Opposing mechanical civilization and rationalism, he committed himself to the “meaningless”, which he expressed through his various works.
Moving to Paris in 1926, he began sculpting at the age of 44.
Alp’s works are refined abstractions; yet they retain an organic warmth and familiarity. The warm touch of life present in his sculptures result from their delicate curvatures, which bear resemblance to the shapes of animals and plants.
This exhibition will be held with the full cooperation of the Arp Museum in Germany. 140 works from the Hans Arp Foundation’s collection, including sculptures, paintings, relieves, and collages, will be on display. This will be his first Japanese large-scale memorial exhibition in 20 years.
