Mikio Naruse

Famed film director, writer and producer Mikio Naruse was born on August 20th 1905 in Tokyo. He joined Shochiku's Kamata studio in 1920, and made his debut film, "Mr. and Mrs. Swordplay (Chanbara fūfū)" ten years later. Success came with "Every Night Dreams (Yogoto No Yume)" starring the queen of Kamata, Sumiko Kurishima. After moving to Photo-Chemical Laboratories (later known as Toho), he created masterpieces such as "Wife, Be Like a Rose" and "Tsuruhachi Tsurujiro", where his lifelong theme of the troubles and dilemmas of married couples are featured.
Naruse's style of excluding loquacious dialog and paying careful attention to the small movements of each actor's eyes and body make for dramas filled with feeling. With the help of Toho's talented staff, represented by cinematographer Masao Tamai and production designer Satoshi Chuko, each movie climbed to the top of movie art. They have gained international reputation as works that teach us that movies are an art form with a good command of detailed light and shadows.
