Pioneers of the Design Globalization: Chairs by Motomi Kawakami, Toshiyuki Kita and Masanori Umeda

Artists

Motomi Kawakami, Toshiyuki Kita, Masanori Umeda
On exhibit are chair designs by three leading Japanese designers - Motomi Kawakami, Toshiyuki Kita and Masanori Umeda. They belong to the same generation, and all were trained as designers in Italy in their twenties. Their experience and recognition in Italy became a foundation for their international success after returning to Japan.
They pioneered the globalization of the designs by collaborating closely with foreign companies and by directing their designs to the international market, instead of limiting themselves to product designs only for local manufacturers or the Japanese market.
The exhibition gathers their most famous works and provides an opportunity to observe their design process through drawings and sketches.
*The museum will specially stay open on Sunday, 6/2.
