While Resfest has expanded to become a multi-platform extravaganza also featuring live music, panels and interactive exhibits, innovative film programming remains the festival's "raison d'etre".
Once again, Resfest offers three shorts programs surveying the year's most compelling live action, animation, cg and hybrid forays into short-form visual storytelling. The festival adds a thematic shorts program this year, Cut and Paste, looking at "homemade" filmmaking that ranges from mash-ups and remixes to collage and traditional animation. And the popular motion graphics and broadcast design showcase By Design once again rounds up the field's most cutting-edge work.
Resfest's long-running and beloved music video programs, Cinema Electronica and Videos That Rock, also return, collecting the year's best marriages of image and sound.
With this year's feature films, Resfest takes a long look at urban culture with two innovative documentaries. Director Doug Pray (Scratch, Hype!) explores the lives of a group of graffiti artists, while Thibaut de Longeville and Lisa Leone's Just for Kicks surveys the explosive growth of the sneaker market over the last three decades. Resfest also reaffirms its commitment to innovative artistry with two local premieres: longtime festival favorite Mike Mills' first feature Thumbsucker screens in San Francisco, while Liam Lynch's documentary chronicling comedian Sarah Silverman's Off Broadway show, Jesus Is Magic, debuts in Chicago.
Resfest also offers another of its celebrated director retrospectives, spotlighting the brash, bold and groundbreaking career of the mad Swedish collective Traktor. And for the first time, offers a retrospective of a recording artist, collecting Beck's most imaginative and inspired video collaborations into one program.
The festival offers an array of special programming too. This includes Triple Threat, a look at three of the most compelling representatives of the latest wave of visual talent: America's Jonnie Ross, Japan's Nagi Noda and France's Francois Vogel. Two by Mike Mills pairs two little-seen earlier films by the celebrated music video director and Thumbsucker creator. From producer Fernando Mereilles, Ginga: The Soul of Brasilian Football is a documentary look at Brazil's national sport. And finally, New Order: Early Years takes a look at the seminal synth-pop band's pioneering work in music video during the 1980s.
