As the last exhibition of its 10th anniversary year, the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography presents an exhibition of photographs by Taro Okamoto. Often associated with the words "Showa era", "rapid economic growth" and "explosion," Okamoto provided his generation with strong psychic influence. He was in the company of photographers such as Brassai and Man Ray during his stay in Paris in the 30s, and upon his return to Japan semi-amateur/semi-pro Okamoto came into dialogue with local photographers such as Ken Domon and Yoshio Watanabe. In addition, from the 50s to the 60s, Okamoto extensively covered the Japanese Islands where he pursued and captured on film the country and its people in their sometimes raw and primitive environments. To Okamoto, this somewhat impudent nature of the Japanese was a form of tradition to be continued and treasured even in the modern age. He later published those works with text; and now, in the 21st century, those photographs by Okamoto are once again drawing attention. This exhibition strives to shed light upon the relationship between these photographs and the artist himself through his prints and texts.
