Incarnations features the newest embodiment of D.H. Rosen’s ever-evolving ceramic-arts style. “This show is about the many ‘incarnations’ of the clay, from raw clay to low-fired bisque, to completed work, and even broken pieces which are then ‘reincarnated’ into something new. It is also about cycles and the ever-evolving nature of life which clay captures like no other medium,” says Rosen.
Rosen, who has frequently exhibited in the United States and was profiled in The Crafts Report Magazine, makes his Tokyo debut at SuperDeluxe, a perfect space for Rosen who likes to bring an interactive element to his exhibitions. “I love to create events where people get involved, creating a connection between artist and audience,” explains Rosen.
The Opening Night party will feature special musical guests and creative audience participation. “I like to invite people to experience the work: to look, to touch, to listen, and even to break and put back together again,” says Rosen. Incarnations will be no exception, and show-goers can expect to see clay-centered performance art and to have the opportunity to both destroy and create artwork anew.
Rosen has developed as a ceramicist who not only makes vessels but also creates ceramic sculptural work designed to capture the vast range of expression clay has to offer. He uses clay in non-traditional ways that speak about the material: works that capture the essence of the medium and reverberate with the energy that he believes is unique to clay. “I believe that the direct contact between artist and material is unique to ceramics and that this direct contact is, and always will be, a spiritual pursuit, whether the object is a simple thrown cup or a free-form sculpture,” shares Rosen.
