Sogan Saito's Life and Work Exhibition

Artists

Sogan Saito
This exhibition presents both works by Kodaira City Yukari's sculptor Sogan Saito as well as the man behind the art himself. Saito was active during and after WWII, and is known chiefly for his reliefs and medals. He belonged to a bright generation of sculptors of the likes of Kotaro Takamura, Seibo Kitamura, Fumio Asakura and Teijiro Nakahara. Up until now, Saito's community life as an artist hasn't received much attention, but he was also a founding member and a key figure of a regional sculptor association called the "Structuralist Company". This organization was established in 1926 with the aim of "blending sculpture with architecture", and produced a large number of influential artists. It is only recently that the Company has been receiving the attention it deserves.
This exhibition forms the ideal opportunity for a larger public to get to know Sogan Saito better, in all his facets; the straightforward and single-minded devotion to his art throughout the turbulent years of the war, his community life, his personality, and of course his exceptional oeuvre.
The "Sogan Saito and the Structuralist Company: War and the Public Sculpture Generation" Symposium will be held on Nov. 24 (Thu) from 6 to 7h30pm at the Musashino Art University Hall 12, room 201.]
