At Museum of Modern Art, Ibaraki
Media: Painting, Drawing

This year, Tamako Kataoka reached her 100th birthday. This exhibition is held in celebration of this amazing occasion.
Kataoka's paintings are exceptional in the sense that they are some of the rare works that manage to push the envelope of what is considered as Japanese-style painting, and also contemporary art. This exhibition consists of 80 of her representative works and 34 sketches. Some of them are: The "Turagamae (a countenance)" series, where historical figures, such as feudal warlords and high priests, are painted bigger than life. The "mountains" series with Mt. Fuji and other volcanoes. And the "pose" series with drawings of nude women, which she began after becoming a member of Japan Academy of Arts in 1982.
