The Carpentry of Karakuwa: The Gifts From The Sea And The Forest

Karakuwa Peninsula, located in the most Northeastern part of Miyagi Prefecture, is surrounded by sea and forest. With mountains renowned for bearing fine wood in its backdrop, homebuilding and shipbuilding technology is far developed and the area has raised many skillful building masters. This exhibition will examine, through factors such as the techniques employed for effective uses of wood for homebuilding and the technology used in shipbuilding that is being applied to modern architecture, the way of life and technology as cultivated by the area's climate. It will focus on the work by Fumio Iwabuchi, a local shipbuilding master.
