Visit to Mud Walls : Historical Landscape of Yamanobe-no-michi Path in Nara

LIXIL Gallery 1 & 2
Finished
Long ago, shacks with walls made of mud balls and layers of earth were found in many parts of Japan. They would be near fields, on the side of main buildings, or on the street in a village. Of simple making, these huts were put to use for various purposes and scattered in many parts of the village.
"Yamanobe-no-michi" in Nara is the oldest road in the history of Japan. The area around the road is also known for its fine earth and its tradition of mud structures, where even today, builders reside and continue the tradition.
This exhibition examines the functional, ecological, and traditional nature of these Japanese mud houses.
