Yusaku Kamekura
For its first regular exhibition of 2006, Ginza Graphic Gallery (ggg) will take a retrospective look at the achievements of Yusaku Kamekura (1915-1997), one of the leading pioneers of graphic design in Japan.
Yusaku Kamekura's career was contemporary to the history of design in Japan. In prewar days, he was active at Nippon Kobo, an early mecca of the design and photography worlds. In postwar times, he garnered widespread international acclaim for his numerous posters and logomarks, especially his posters created for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and the 1970 Osaka Expo. Throughout his long career, he continued to play a central role within the domestic design profession, as illustrated by his vital contributions to the creation of the Japan Advertising Artists Club (JAAC) and the Japan Graphic Designers Association Inc. (JAGDA).
The exhibition at ggg will include roughly 170 of Yusaku Kamekura’s graphic works, including items from prewar days shown for the very first time. Collectively, they provide a detailed retrospective look into the lengthy and illustrious career of a pillar in Japanese design.
In tandem with the exhibition, ggg is publishing a volume in its gggBooks series devoted entirely to Yusaku Kamekura. The book features Kamekura's own writings describing his views toward design as well as essays of an autobiographical nature. (For details, refer to the note provided separately.)
