Leonor Fini
Leonor Fini, an artist with extraordinary attraction together with black eyes and hair, was born in 1907 to an Argentinean father and an Italian mother whose ancestors were from Spain, Venice, Slavdom and other diverse areas. She made a spectacular debut in Paris as a unique female surrealism painter hooking up with fantastical artists Leonora Carrington and Dorothea Tanning. After 1935, new friendships with Ernst, Bataille and other artists of the moment, helped her broadened her talents from painting exhibitions in Paris, London and NY, to book illustrations, stage installations at the Paris Opera House, costume and props for ballet and movies and even jewelry designs.
Although her skills could have appeared as temporarily charismatic at that time, her creativity still has broad appeal in our 21st century. In contrast, many tableaus that she created, showing women in meditation-like poses, betrayed her longing for ancient society rituals of mystique origins. "I paint what I'd like to see but doesn't exist". Her magical skills will bring you a glimpse of sacred worlds.
This exhibition is a chance to review Fini's less-known art, through 100 pieces of her oil paintings, drawings, stage costumes and jewelry crafts.
