Akira Yamaguchi Exhibition
This event has ended.
At Mitsukoshi Nihonbashi - 6th Floor Galleries
Media: Painting, Drawing
In these past few years, Akira Yamaguchi has shown brilliant artistry with paintings that go beyond the boundaries set by time and space. This exhibition is the first solo event for Yamaguchi at Nihonbashi's Mitsukoshi Store, a relationship that started last year when he was asked to take care of the store's centennial anniversary ad campaign. In addition to three pieces from this campaign, a complete overview of Yamaguchi's life and work as a 'master painter', comprising several grand works, is showcased. A new work entitled "Lawn and Large Tower Building Site" depicting Tokyo Tower and its surroundings was made especially for this exhibition. Of special interest are also "Masses" and "Battle" in which past and present are mingled, or "Birds Eye", an extraordinary combination of ancient Japanese-style painting and modern aspects: we see modern cityscapes along with old Japanese houses and classic stairwells, all painted with medieval composition techniques. That typifying mixture of old and new is also found in "After Yamato-e", which reads like an old story from right to left, or even in "Drawing", where organic creatures such as human beings and animals are united with mechanical, machine-like entities. And what to think of "After Deception-painting", in which all our common prejudices are questioned? By convincing the audience of Akira Yamaguchi's artistic magnetism through his work of the past, this event also attempts to look into the future, thus becoming a pro-spective exhibition as much as a retro-spective one.
