Ms. Kitaura's exhibition "Pianissimo" was shown at Gallery Honjoh last year. She is a Christian and is taken with the simple characters who appear in the Bible and in short stories in Tolstoy's writings; she creates copper-engravings of the minor characters in those stories. Recently, she proclaimed that she not only adores them, but wishes to live just like them.
Copper-engraving medium is her palate because she considers the slight touching, the blur, and the swell of ink on the copper engravings express the stories and world she is trying to create.
The characters she draws are ones who are under adverse circumstances, enduring hardships, and living through their beliefs. Her lines and inks strongly and gently express various nuances of their lives.
In this exhibition, in addition to the 7 works based upon the Biblical stories of Jesus from his Crucifixion through Resurrection, 30 prints (copper-engravings and hand-coloured copper-engraving plates) describe her thoughts and stories of her own surroundings.
