In recent years, there have been many discoveries about the history of the Silk Road in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Xian. Xinjiang is known as the strategic area, and Xian as the starting and ending points of the Silk Road. Discoveries include the ruins of the legendary kingdom of Lou-lan near the Taklamakan desert and the graves with mural paintings near Xian which depict the historical trade between the eastern and western civilizations.
