Federico Herrero
Federico Herrero (born in 1978 in Costa Rica) emerged on the international art scene at the 49th Venice Biennale in 2001. His gigantic painting of animals won him recognition and a special prize for young artists. Since, he has been participating in numerous international art shows. This year, Herrero was commissioned to make an installation for the Aichi Expo. There, he presented "World Map," composed of ponds taking form of geographical representations. Appropriately addressing the themes of environment and water, this multi-functional work allowed visitors to simultaneously play in the ponds and cross borders freely.
In this exhibition, Herrero strives to reevaluate his role as a painter. The title of this exhibition "Live Surfaces" reflects his attempt to allow the painting to break free from the canvas and move onto walls of buildings and other structural facades; there, he hopes to give the paintings new life, as well as a different social function.
