James Welling
Based in Los Angeles, California, James Welling became known for his works of abstract photographs employing materials such as aluminum foil and velvet. In the past 30 years of his artistic career, Welling's oeuvre has extended widely from black and white photographs of railways and architectural structures to vibrant abstract photograms.
This will be the most recent exhibition of Welling's photographs at Wako Works of Art since his exhibition two years ago. Welling displays how he continues to question photography and to delve its physical phenomenon through two working series, "Flowers" and "Screens," that have both eliminated the use of a camera. The work in "Flowers" is made by placing Plumbago flowers on large black and white negatives and exposing them to light, and then printing on metallic photo paper using one of Newton's 7 primary colors. His other series, "Screens" involves placing photo paper directly under light, and also letting light through metal screens.
There will be a total of 8 new works on display, as well as a number of the artist's earlier works, that collectively bid the viewer to observe what lies within the photographic invisible.
