Ever since Chen was studying at the Art Academy in Duesseldorf, he paints simple geometric forms repeatedly on canvas, and gives equal value to the image and the background. This is his experiment to unite, in his painting, the tradition of Chinese painting which is already a part of his nature, with the European modernism.
With his shallow, decrative painting space, with the delicate blot of acrylic which reminds us ink painting in China, and with the metaphysical light overflowing from the inside of the painting to our world, Chen succeeded to produce very unique and attractive paintings.
Now Chen has already spent fourteen years in Germany. It seems that he has obtained his own original painting style, easily jumped over the framework of confrontation of the East and the West however his fundamental stance is the same and consistent, which is a Chinese painter who is working in the middle of European modern culture.
