Yoshio Murakami: Purified in the North
This event has ended.
At Taro Okamoto Museum of Art, Kawasaki
Media: Painting, Photography, Sculpture
Greatly influenced by Taro Okamoto, Yoshio Murakami is searching for the roots of the original Japanese culture, in northern Japan. This retrospective exhibition contemplates the bond between the artist and the land.
Yoshio Murakami was born in Morioka, Iwate. Friendship with Okamoto initiated Murakami's interests in folklore and the relationship between a painter and a land. Currently, he actively produces collages of ancient manuscripts and also fireworks, in Hirosaki, Aomori. His main interest has shifted from social issues to the northern culture.
Murakami is also strongly influenced by artists Tetsugoro Yorozu and Shunsuke Matsumoto. Yorozu's passions for folklore and Matsumoto's poetic sentiments provided Murakami with two opposite views on the region.
