Carter Kustera "Fabulous Anger"
This event has ended.
At NCA | Nichido Contemporary Art
Media: Painting
This is Carter Kustera's first solo show in Japan. With his unique satirical style, Carter Kustera keenly depicts our identity in a consumer driven society often presenting various urban scenes involving violence. Contrary to popular fashion ads that solely create superficial beauty and glamour, his paintings illustrate problems in urban societies, such as random, strategic and domestic violence. Each painting references the "fashion layout", with its graphics, text and beautiful models dressed in extravagant and stylish attire.
In his work titled "Killed by Art", one woman lies dead on the floor under a drawing by international artist Robert Longo. The copy in the painting reads "The thing you love the most is always the most dangerous" and the prices and makers of her clothing are presented in precise detail. Carter Kustera's art grasps the nature of our consumer society by contrasting the price of fashion and the deeds of those who wear it.
