Masayoshi Aigasa
Solo exhibition of Masayoshi Aigasa, one of the main artists of the Tokyo Opera City collection.
After graduating from art school, and a series of failures in art competitions, he gave up oil painting for collage art. "Civilization Hatred Series" is a collage series made with pictures taken from photography magazines and print arts, which satirically expresses human cultivation and even human beings themselves. Aigasa now focuses on experimenting with monochrome images. According to Aigasa himself, this series comes across as a stalemate, a deadlock, in which he expresses doubts towards the subject, criticizes it, makes fun of it. It is a way for him to convey his interest and hatred towards human beings in an objective manner. This dual desire for objectivity and distance towards the socio-cultural environment the artist is not only inevitably part of, but clearly also emotionally linked with is the main thread throughout his work.
