New Otani Art Museum
Finished

Artists

Lucie Rie
In this exhibition, the life and techniques of sculptor Lucie Rie will be explored through 60 of her ceramic works. The Austrian born Rie (1902 - 1995) had always been fascinated by the ceramics turning-wheel. After graduating from the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, she went on to become an acclaimed modern style ceramic artist at the Vienna Workshop, at the height of the Vienna Secession. In 1938, Rie moved to the UK to escape Nazi oppression, where she perfected her style. Consisting of "scraping", "marquetry", and "spiralling" by mixing two or more types of clays and creating spiral design, sisitors will appreciate her simple but sophisticated style.
