Artists

Yuichi Higashionna
Yuichi Higashionna freely traverses the mediums of painting, video, and installation to explore and pry loose preconceived ideas of 'perception'. On the surface of his works, a similar vernacular as found in the trick-bag of Moire and Optical effect is applied to make such works in which, light and shadow seem to have switched places, while conceptually backing his oeuvre is the chorus of Japan's postwar cultural kitsch.
The focus of this exhibition titled 'Chandelier!' will be Higashionna's sculpture series which re-contextualizes our main light source in contemporary Japan: the fluorescent light. From the postwar era to the present, fluorescent lights have been filling households with their flat, bright, white illumination. This bright light coolly seeps into the nooks of rooms, leaving in its wake not a shade of theatrical ambience, instead, fixating the space in flatness. On display will be a large sphere composed of fluorescent light halos, titled 'untitled (naked ball)' and a chandelier of clustered-together fluorescent light rods, titled 'untitled (chandelier)', amongst various new works. Look out for an interesting mutual resonance between the industrial atmosphere of the gallery's surrounding and Higashionna's installation, which continue out of the gallery space, trickling down the hall and stairs.
