"National Treasure - Bandai Nagon Scrolls" Exhibition

Idemitsu Museum of Arts
Finished
In the long and illustrious history of Japanese paintings, the Heian Period stands out as the era that consistently produced some of the most beautiful Buddhist paintings, reflecting the sensitive aesthetics of the nobles and superior techniques of the artists.

This is an exhibition of the Bandai Nagon Scrolls, one of the 'four main picture scrolls' of this period. The scrolls depict the Ohtenmon Incident of 866 in precise detail.

Prior to this exhibition, Idemitsu Museum of Arts performed optical research with the National Research Institute for Cultural Properties, Tokyo. Their research delved into the mysteries of the relation between the Ohtenmon Incident and the scrolls. The exhibition includes many blown-up photographs of the characters in the scrolls by using digital photograph techniques.

Due to the advanced age of the scrolls, duplicates will be displayed at times. Please visit their website for further details.
