In 2006, the new film series, "Cross-section of Japan's Cinematic Past" which shows historical Japanese films according to various themes and genres, began with its first program "The World of Nikkatsu Action Films". Following on is this 2nd program, "Song and Dance Tradition".

Since the dissemination of records, many songs have become popular hits among the Japanese people over the years. This has since been closely linked to the film industry - the largest mass entertainment industry in the 20th century. With the introduction of talkie films, not only have films generated hit songs, but at times, it is a song that leads a film to great success. Also, American musicals have stimulated Japanese filmmakers to create their very own musicals featuring Japanese music and culture.

This special program begins with early talkie films starring Kenichi Enomoto, and moves on to popular films from the 1950s starring Hibari Misora and the Crazy Cats, as well as those from the 60s featuring Western-influenced group sounds. From there, the program looks at films from the 70s when the 'idol' was formally established. In total, the program will feature 27 carefully selected Japanese films from the past.
