Media: Painting, Art Talk
Culture and art that we encounter for the first time always makes a big impression on us. The artists of the Edo era, during which direct exchange with the outside world was repressed, encountered art through products of culture such as the hand-painted Western style painting, which the Meiji era artists who met Western art forms for the first time in Europe struggled hard to bring to Japan. The "Yoga" (Western style painting) techniques and forms of expression are completely different, but the works made in this style derive their strength from the sense of emotion and wonder of "a meeting across the ocean".
