Teinosuke Kinugasa
This exhibition celebrates the 110th anniversary of the birth of one of Japan's famed directors, Teinosuke Kinugasa (1896-1982).
Kinugasa started out as a female impersonator on stage before he was invited to join the Nikkatsu Mukaijima Studio in 1917, where he started working as an actress and movie director. Some of his more avant garde works include the silent movie "A Page of Madness" (1926), "Crossroad" (1928) , "An Actor's Revenge" (1935-36) with Chojiro Hayashi, and "The Gate of Hell" (1953), for which he was awarded the 1954 Palme d'or at Cannes.

Related items from the Film Center collection and rare material from Kinugasa's research trips to the Soviet Union and Germany will be on display,
