Sumiko Kai "Plant Shoes"

LIXIL Gallery 1 & 2
Finished

Artists

Sumiko Kai
Kai's works consist of photographs of shoes made out of flowers. This exhibition will show shoes made out of mimosas, cherry blossoms, horse chestnuts, dandelions, acacias and hydrangeas, all in full bloom, as well as some dozen composite photographs of their withered forms in nature. There will also be some actual shoes on display, made out of forsythia, which are currently in season.
She makes the works by producing a mould of her feet out of wire and straw and then inserting flowers that are in season into it so as to make a shoe. She then photographs them once the flowers are in full bloom, and then again in the outdoors when they are withering away.
Kai worked as an installation artist and woodblock printer in Japan for many years before moving to Paris in 1992. In 1997 she started making shoes out of flowers for the first time and in the eight years since, she has produced more than 250 photographs.
