Chris Duncan
Oakland-based artist Chris Duncan comes to Tokyo’s Nakaochiai Gallery to present his signature string installation and new paintings on paper and panel. Duncan’s site-specific string installation has been shown at numerous arts centers and galleries in the US, while his paintings will receive their first showing at Nakaochiai Gallery.

The show’s title, ‘Playing Fields’ reflects Duncan’s interest in the metaphorical playing field, the place where society finds itself embroiled in constant competition. Duncan says, ‘we are all scrambling to get ahead, climb the corporate ladder, rise to the top, but in the end we are all just a small piece to an indefinable puzzle, no one being any better or worse than another.’

Visitors who previously saw Duncan's work at Nakaochiai Gallery’s 2005 show ‘Realms of San Francisco’ will see a marked development in the artist’s style. The work on display at Playing Fields departs from his earlier representational imagery; rather, the abstract paintings and installation invite the viewer into the field itself.

There will be an opening reception with the artist on October 14 (Saturday), from 18:00 - 21:00 and the artist will also be at the gallery on October 15 (Sunday).
